The Blue Cape of Human Rights is an ephemeral and living mobile monument dedicated to each individual in every part of the world....
As opposed to existing monuments made of stone or of bronze that are immobile, eternally fastened to the ground, this one is a monument to the journey. It is immense, as twelve people can inhabit it; light, because it is made of cloth and fits into a large bag that will travel with the artist and a camera crew to meet people around the world and deliver a message to them:
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! CONNAISSEZ VOS DROITS!
There are thirty of these rights, and most of them are unknown to all, yet they are essential to justice and to human dignity. HUMAN RIGHTS, LES DROITS DE L’HOMME have existed for 60 years, in fact, we hope to celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2008...
By opening the Cape in different countries around the world and filming – first the performances in Europe, from Brussels to Dublin, Strasbourg, Berlin, Warsaw, Rome, Barcelona – to continue other journeys later to Africa, then the Middle East, India, Japan, China, Russia, North America, South America, Australia, ending in Antarctica... where images of the journey and the names of the rights that we all have a right to will be projected on the immense ice screen.
And we suggest that this cape remains THE CAPE OF HUMAN RIGHTS, and that in cases of conflict with these rights and certain countries, the garment monument be sent as a peaceful and musical reminder that these rights exist and must be respected.
Each performance will be different in function of the identity and the culture of the country we are visiting where each time we will find 12 performers on location to inhabit the Cape and one/several musicians to accompany the event.
A documentary film will be made during the journey, it will be shot digitally. At each station of the journey we will make one performance (+ 1 rehearsal) that we will shoot over the course of several hours for a final product of 6 to 15 minutes for each country.
