Mohammed Ali Atassi

Mohammed Ali Atassi is a Syrian journalist and human rights activist. He writes in particular for the cultural supplement of the well-known Lebanese daily An Nahar.

After his studies in France where he received a DEA in history at Sorbonne Paris 4, he returned to Syria in 1999  where he campaigned for human rights, notably by writing articles on Syrian dissidents and human rights violations in his own country.

In 2001 he produced a documentary film on the life of Syrian dissident Riad Turk (condemned to 18 years in prison). As a declared critic of the Baath government he has signed most petitions of Syrian intellectuals in favour of a political opening in Syria.

Born in Damas in 1967 Ali Atassi lives and works in Beirut.
