Luisa Morgantini

Mrs. Luisa Morgantini is an Italian Member of the European Parliament. She was elected on the Communist Refoundation Party ticket and sits with the European United Left - Nordic Green Left group.  She is a leading member of the Italian peace movement.  She is currently a Vice-President of the European Parliament and the Parliament’s Bureau. She is a member of the Committee on Development, the Subcommittee on Human Rights as well as belonging to the delegations for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council and the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

Luisa Morgantini studied industrial sociology and economics at Ruskin College, Oxford (1967-1968). She has long been professionally associated with the trade union movement, in particular since 1971 with the Italian Metalworkers’ union (FLM). She also served as a member of the executive committee of the European metal workers’ federation  (FEM) (1987-1988).

Luisa Morgantini was first elected to the European Parliament in 1999 and served as the Chairwoman of the Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council (1999-2004) as well as participating in numerous committees and delegations.

Outside of Parliament she has worked as an Electoral observer for the OSCE, as the coordinator for the Italy-Nicaragua Association and as the National Spokesperson for the Association for Peace. Luisa Morgantini is a co-founder of the 'Women in Black' anti-war movement and of the international network 'Women for peace in conflict zones'. 

Her efforts have been recognized by numerous prizes and awards, including the Israeli 'Women in Black' Peace Prize (1996) and the Colomba d'Oro Prize for peace (2002).  She is also one of the 1000 women collectively nominated under the '1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005' project and a winner of the Parliament Magazine's MEP Award for achievement in the field of development .
