Horacio Verbitsky (Buenos Aires, 1942) is a political columnist for the daily Pagina 12, President of the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) and author of 17 books on political, military, ecclesiastical and human rights themes. Various of his books forced issues in the regional agenda: Robo para la Corona (Theft for the Crown) revealed the corruption of the political class by economic power; Hacer la Corte exposed the political manipulation of justice; Un mundo sin periodistas denounced the political persecution of the independent press; El Vuelo, El Silencio and Doble Juego report on the military and ecclesiastical responsibility during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship.
He is currently writing a political history of the Catholic Church in Argentina, of which two tomes have already been published, Cristo Vence and La Violencia evangélica.
He was awarded the Prize of the Latin American Studies Association for “best long term journalistic coverage in Latin America”, for “his absolutely essential role in the investigation of human rights violations under the military regime and of corruption under constitutional governments”.
He is a member of the Board of the Fundacion Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano chaired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, of Human Rights Watch/Americas and of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
